In cooperation with local community partners,
Audubon of Kansas manages and protects Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie--30
acres of native prairie that overlooks the Wabaunsee County countryside
and holds a rich history involving the Beecher Bible and Rifle Colony,
the underground railroad and early military expeditions
Mt. Mitchell Prairie Heritage Park is a delightful native prairie with a magnificent historical tie to the Wabaunsee community effort ot make Kansas a free state, and to the underground railroad. The view of the surrounding pastoral landscape and the Kansas River Valley from Mt. Mitchell is spectacular. We invite you to visit the prairie and enjoy the abundance of wildflowers and birds found along the trail there.
In addition to the original 32 acres of native prairie, Audubon of Kansas has purchased an additional 15.5 acres to include both sides of the prominent hill and greatly enhance access opportunities for educational and casual visitation devoted to the natural and cultural history of the area. And educational trail to the top, benches along the way in the shade of trees and artful interpretative signs and publications will be developed, along with the addition of gravel on the township road and a modest parking area. We will also be restoring the full diversity of native prairie plants on the newly acquired acreage.
Persons interested in assisting in any way with on-site improvements or with the financial aspects of the land acquisition and improvements are encouraged to be in touch with Audubon of Kansas. Contributions an any amount will be greatly appreciated. A gift of $1,600 will purchase an acre of the addition to the prairie park.
