Learn about our recent work with the Kansas legislature.

There are many things we can all do!

1). Please share information with others within your network of friends

2). Write letters-to-the-editor to newspapers of your choice (we can provide e-mail and postal addresses)

3). Write to the Logan County Commissioners asking them to work equally with wildlife-friendly landowners to conserve native wildlife (including prairie dog colonies) as well as landowners who are not receptive to having prairie dogs on their land. We respect the viewpoints of those neighboring landowners, as well, and the conservation team working on this project has offered to help them control prairie dogs on their land.

Indicate to the commissioners that if wildlife viewing opportunities on these ranches are preserved (as the landowners want) you would like to visit Logan County to see wildlife including Burrowing Owls, Ferruginous Hawks, Golden Eagles, Swift Foxes and hopefully some day Black-footed Ferrets in the wild associated with the prairie dog colonies.

4). It is important now for everyone from throughout the state to express their support with calls, e-mails or letters to their representatives and senators - especially members of the House Agriculture Committee. You can obtain information about the status of the bills (and leave messages for legislators) by calling the legislative toll free number (1-800-432-3924). You can also visit the Kansas Legislature web site (www.kslegislature.org). Any assistance and involvement you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

5). Write letters in support. Personal letters are one of the most pleasant, but often neglected, part of our “culture of conservation.” We frequently neglect to thank people for what they do to help make the world a better place, and to help make every day Earth Day. Please let us know if you are interested in writing to any of the landowners who have stood up against all unfounded attempts to poison wildlife on their land, withstood major legal costs and other assaults. They are truly contemporary American conservation heroes. They remind us of those who stepped forward to save some to the last Bison in the Great Plains from senseless slaughter. We can provide you with the names and mailing addresses.

6). Stay in the Loop and Stay Involved. Stay in touch with Audubon of Kansas and/or any other organization that will keep you up to date on developments and/or post timely information on a website. Please let us know if you want to be specifically included with any communications on the subject. We plan to enhance our attention to this responsibility with this website, our AOK e-Newsletter, Action Alerts and the AOK Blog.
