What to Expect

Participants will observe Sharp-tailed Grouse from a spacious popup blind (Ameristep Magnum Caretaker), which comfortably fits four people and a small tripod. Two participants sit near the viewing window, with two seated behind them, rotating positions during the morning. Each person has 30 x 30 inches of space, and blinds are set 100-200 feet from the lek, facing west for optimal sunrise photography.

Photography Guidelines:
Photographers using large tripods and lenses should consider reserving multiple spaces for additional room:

  • Two spaces (30 x 60 inches) – Comfortable space to photograph half the lek.
  • Entire blind – Exclusive use of the blind with room to photograph the entire lek or use a personal blind.

Participant Considerations:
For optimal viewing, you will meet the guide 1-1.5 hours before sunrise. Expect to sit still in cold temperatures for 4+ hours without restroom access. Participants must be at least 12 years old and capable of walking up to a half mile in the dark over uneven terrain. Limited accommodations are available for those with mobility concerns.

What to Bring

Sitting in a blind for hours at sunrise—the coldest part of the day—can be extremely cold. Average lows range from the 20s°F in March, 30s°F in April, and 40s°F in May, but wind can make it feel even colder. To stay warm, wear at least three layers (long underwear, pants, and insulated outerwear such as snow pants or coveralls). Warm boots, gloves, a hat, and a scarf to cover your nose and mouth are essential. A blanket can also help.

Since blind space is limited, avoid bringing backpacks. Instead, carry essentials like snacks, a phone, and a camera in your pockets. Bring a water bottle and wear binoculars around your neck. Backpacks can be left in the vehicle.

We recommend staying at the Hutton Ranch House the night before your scheduled tour. For example, if your tour is March 4, book lodging for arrival on March 3 and departure on March 4. Check-in is at 3:00 PM, and check-out is at 12:00 PM. Additional nights may be available. Lodging reservations can be made when booking your tour.
