Step into History and Nature at Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park

Nestled just south of Wamego, Kansas, Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park offers a stunning glimpse into both natural and historical landscapes. This prairie remnant is tied to Captain William Mitchell, a key figure in the Underground Railroad. Throughout the growing season, an ever-changing display of wildflowers blankets the land. Scenic trails lead visitors to the summit of the prominent hill, offering breathtaking views year-round. In partnership with the Mount Mitchell Prairie Guards, Audubon of Kansas maintains this public park, working to restore the prairie to its original condition as it was in Captain Mitchell’s time. The park is open to visitors 365 days a year from dawn to dusk.
