Protecting Lands for Future Generations
AOK is building a network of Protected Areas to:
1) demonstrate best practices in habitat conservation and restoration to create high-value wildlife habitat;
2) show how farming and ranching can work hand-in-hand with conservation; and
3) provide places where people can experience quality wildlife habitat across Kansas.
AOK acquires properties primarily through land donations from owners who want their land protected as a lasting personal or family legacy. This effort began with the Hutton Niobrara Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary, a 5,000-acre Nebraska ranch donated by Harold and Lucille Hutton to ensure its protection in perpetuity. Since then, additional landowners have entrusted AOK with their properties, including Connie Achterberg, who donated her 240-acre childhood farm to create the Connie Achterberg Wildlife-Friendly Demonstration Farm. Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park, originally owned by the Kansas Historical Society, has also joined AOK’s Protected Areas Program and is co-managed with the Mount Mitchell Prairie Guards.
AOK continues to explore new Protected Areas, working closely with landowners to align their long-term vision with AOK’s conservation goals. With several properties already in development, AOK remains committed to expanding this network and ensuring the natural landscapes of Kansas and Nebraska endure for generations to come.
