A Legacy of Conservation
Founded in 1999, Audubon of Kansas has deep roots in the Great Plains. It was created by the Audubon Council—a consortium of ten Kansas Audubon chapters—to serve as a strong, independent voice for conservation in the region. Over time, AOK succeeded the Audubon Council and is now led by a diverse Board of Trustees, including conservation leaders, farmers, ranchers, and others who share a commitment to preserving native ecosystems.
Ron Klataske served as AOK’s first Executive Director, leading the organization’s conservation efforts for over two decades. In January 2021, he passed the torch to Dr. Jackie Augustine, a prairie-chicken researcher with a strong background in academia and a deep connection to Kansas. Under her leadership, AOK continues to champion conservation initiatives, advocate for policy change, and engage communities in protecting the Great Plains' natural heritage.
