Each spring and fall, the vast majority of North America’s Sandhill Cranes migrate through Kansas and Nebraska, relying on key stopover sites for rest and nourishment. For more than 50 years, Audubon leaders and members across the region have worked to safeguard essential habitats and water resources, including Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area in Kansas. Audubon of Kansas remains steadfast in its commitment to securing lasting protections for these landscapes and the countless species that depend on them.

Kansas plays a vital role in protecting Whooping Cranes as they make their twice-yearly migration between breeding grounds in Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park and wintering habitat at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. Safe, well-managed stopover sites in the central Great Plains are essential for their survival. Audubon of Kansas has long been a leader in conservation and advocacy, working to safeguard these critical habitats and advance policies that reduce risks and support the recovery of this endangered species.
